Port Macquarie Campus student Oliver Harris was selected to undertake a school Work Experience opportunity at Taronga Zoo in Sydney last week. Oliver returned from Taronga Zoo on a high from positive experience. Below is an interview with Oliver highlighting his fantastic week at the Zoo.
Name: Oliver Harris Year10
Employer: Taronga Zoo at Mosman in Sydney
Main duties: Feeding, preparing food, cleaning, maintenance of animal enclosures and monitoring of animals.
Area’s worked in at the Zoo: I worked in the Primates and Ungulates Section (e.g. giraffe, gorilla, chimpanzee, lemur, meerkat, bongo, elephant)
Things I enjoyed the most: I definitely enjoyed working with the wide range of animals. In the section I worked there were large exotic animals that most people don’t get a chance to interact with as a keeper. It was great to meet and work with new people. Just working at a Zoo with an amazing physical setting was an incredible experience.
Was this a worthwhile experience? Why? Most definitely YES! It was an amazing and rare opportunity. It was very interesting working in a world class zoo and learning about what goes on behind the scenes in this field.
Has this Work Experience inspired you to seek a career in this industry? Yes it has. I have always had an interest in animals and now I am sure that this what I would like to do.
