Lewis Kranitis

WASCALS (Westport Aware Students of Cancer and Leukemia Sufferers) is a volunteer charity group at Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus which includes a group of inspirational students from Years 7 to 12, and teachers.

The group aims to raise awareness, support the community and give hope to those affected by cancer.

When approached by their sister campus to financially support entry into the Ironman 70.3 so that former student and school captain Lewis Kranitis could compete in September – the decision was a resounding yes!

Lewis was one of the Port Macquarie Campus School Captains in 2018-2019. He has had a long history of student leadership throughout his six years at Port Macquarie Campus.

In Term Two 2019, after complaining of headache and neck pain, his mother took him for what was meant to be a routine doctor's check-up. The news that followed that appointment was nothing short of shocking.

Lewis was diagnosed with CNS Germinoma, a brain tumour.

He started undertaking chemotherapy at Westmead Hospital while continuing his full-time study at Hastings Secondary College, Port Macquarie Campus. Imagine the stress that goes with studying, assessment tasks, learning new content every day, and addressing a life-threatening illness? Lewis took this challenge head-on.

The College community is in awe that Lewis maintained such focus, such positivity and pushed himself. He supported his family and his peers. He sat his exams either at our campus or at Westmead Hospital.

You would think he may have done ok. This young man not only did ok, he did amazingly!! Lewis scored Band 5 in 4 subjects and a Band 4 in Advanced English. His results were outstanding.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference, and thanks to WASCALS, this young man continues to be a positive role model that will have a lasting impact on our community.

WASCALS was recognised as a charity group in 1992 and has since its inception, raised over $300,000.

Distribution of money goes directly to people living with cancer within the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area or to fundraising activities where the money raised goes towards finding a cure for cancer.
