Principal Message Duncan

Welcome to the first week of winter!

Students and staff have made the best of the COVID situation and, while there will be some restrictions, including excursions and visitors, the levels of engagement and flexibility have been high from our students. We are looking forward to continuing to move towards 'normal operations' for our campus as the weeks progress.

For this semester only we have revised our approach to student assessment and reporting to reflect the challenges of the pandemic has placed on teaching and learning on the college, which is supported by the Department of Education.

As Principals of the Hastings Valley Community of Schools we maintain a very close connection with one another through our regular network meetings. When we came together on Thursday we looked at our new 4 year school planning cycle, the ongoing development of the Year 6 into 7 transition programs for both Mainstream and Supported Learning students as well as further enhancing all teacher’s professional skills through Instructional Leadership. As a collective of schools, this very close partnership ensures we are providing the very best education through the student’s journey from Kindergarten through to Year 12.

It is with great pride that we announce that Hastings Secondary College has been selected as finalists in the Australian Education Awards in two categories - Rising Star of the Year Lloyd Godson and Best STEM Program. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held at Doltone House - Darling Island on Friday 6 November 2020.

Over the past week, we have celebrated National Reconciliation Week, with several initiatives including the viewing of the documentary ‘In My Blood It Runs’, the opening of the first of the Aboriginal Connection Hub and the announcement of our first Aboriginal Robotics Team.

The establishment of our first Aboriginal Robotics team will see students enter the TMax Robotic competition later this year, in which we believe will be the first Aboriginal Team in the competition.

As winter arrives and cooler days are expected, students and parents are reminded that school uniform is required each day. Different coloured jumpers, hoodies or tracksuit pants are not part of our uniform. We take pride in our school and uniform. Please make sure you set your child up for success. Our uniform opening hours of our campus is Tuesday and Thursdays between 7:30am and 8:30am.

This week Year 10 students attended an information session where they were presented with information about senior course pathways and given a copy of the Hastings Secondary College Senior Studies Guide. Parents are reminded to book their interview times on their campus parent portal.

Students are being encouraged to enter the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Minecraft competition for schools to entry their ideal town of the future using design thinking processes. More information can be found at Think 2050 - Minecraft Competition.

Warm regards
