There is no need for me to remind you of the shocking week we have experienced as a result of the local fires. My thoughts go out particularly to the parents and students of the Lake Innes, Lake Cathie and the Bonny Hills areas. On Tuesday last I called a full school assembly in order to get the students from those areas home to family as soon as possible.
Also on Tuesday the Westport Campus was opened as a shelter for students and the general public who were unable to return home on that day. It was staffed by police, Red Cross personnel and school staff. On advice from the police the centre was closed in the early evening.
Liam Birrer, one of our Year 12 students currently doing his HSC exams, missed one of his exams this week. The reason being that he is a volunteer with the Rural Fire Service and was on fire duties when the exam was scheduled. This is a great example of a student putting family and community ahead of himself. Fantastic selfless effort. I am currently following up with NESA (NSW Educational Standards Authority) to see what can be done in supporting Liam with his missed exam.
Thursday was Halloween. A number of staff and students dressed up for the occasion. There was a sausage sizzle at Lunch 1 to raise money for a local charity.
A number of students attended the stage production of Billy Elliot in Sydney on Wednesday. Another fantastic opportunity for those students. A big thank you to the staff that supported that event.
Leadership elections were held on Tuesday. As a result the 2020 Student Leadership Team will consist of 15 students from Year 11 and Year 12. The elected representatives met on Thursday to elect the campus captains. It gives me great pleasure to announce Imogene Salt and Travis Chandley-Pascoe as the 2020 Westport Captains and Phoenix Nincsics and Amy de Haan as the Vice Captains. Congratulations to all concerned with this important role.
