To our valued Hastings Secondary College Community,

Welcome Back to Term 2.

Hastings Secondary College is committed to a staged return to school for all students throughout Term 2. A recommencement of online delivery for students (‘learning from home’) will continue from Wednesday 29 April 2020 using a combination of Google classroom and Zoom. Learning from home will continue until the end of Week 2, Friday 8 May 2020.

Non-Essential Working Parents and Families of Non-Essential Employees

We want to emphasise that students should not be attending school during weeks 1 or 2 unless their family is an essential worker or where families have no other alternatives. The need for care and isolation cannot be underestimated.

Staged Return of Students

The staged approach allows the College to balance the many diverse considerations of the current pandemic, such as the health and safety of all, student learning and social distancing requirements for adults on-site at both campuses. The College will continue to be open for the supervision of children whose parents are essential workers and are unable to learn from home.

Hastings Secondary College has a plan in place for the return of students from Week 3 (11th May 2020). These are as follows;

In beginning this transition back to school, priority has been given to students in Years 11 and 12.

As you can appreciate we are attempting to adhere to the NSW Government guidelines of limited number of students on site in the initial stages. The recommended number of students on site currently sits at 25%.

What is most important to highlight in our planning is that we will be explicitly teaching our Year 11 and 12 students on the days they attend school. Teachers will either Zoom or google classroom any senior students who are still in isolation so they will not be disadvantaged.

For our students in Years 7-10, teachers will be available to supervise students and assist learning, but not deliver face to face lessons in the usual format that existed prior to COVID-19 restrictions. This is due to the social distancing measures restricting the number of students in classes and the number of specialist teachers on-site at the campus.

School Cleaning and Movement of Students

Hastings Secondary College, in conjunction with the Department of Education has organised an additional 40 hours of cleaning each week. As such, we will be identifying specific blocks for year groups to be working in. Orders for additional protective equipment, soap, hand sanitiser, gloves and goggles have been ordered and are available to use.

Students working online, whilst on campus, will be asked to clean their devices prior to and at the end of the day.

Bring Your Own Devices

Students are asked to bring their own device or a borrowed device to school.

Entering the school including school drop-off and pick up

To limit the possibility of COVID 19 spread, we are asking that parents do not enter the school for drop off and pick up. The office area is the only place that parents will be allowed. Please use Findlay Ave or Taxi area (for Supported Learning students) for drop off or pick up and stay in your car.

Canteen and Uniform Shop – this to be Campus specific

Unfortunately our school canteen is unable to be opened at the moment.  Students who attend school due to family circumstances will need to bring their own food and water.

For families requiring access to the uniform shop, please contact the front office staff via the school email ( hsc-westport-school@det.nsw.edu.au) who will be more than willing to assist you by arranging a suitable time for all purchases.

Students and Staff who are unwell

We ask that you not send your child to school if they are unwell. In the event that a child is unwell or perceived to be unwell, they will be triaged in an appropriate area for social distancing and parents / carers will be required to collect them immediately.

Any staff who become ill, will be sent home to minimise the possible transmission of any sickness. With your assistance and careful consideration around the transmission of illness we can minimise the impact of colds, flu and COVID-19 in our community by making sensible decisions about when we send our children to school.

The Online Learning Platform

Staff have worked tirelessly on planning and delivering suitable work for our students. We cannot thank them enough for the additional hours they have spent working on their programs so that your children can continue their learning. Please allow our staff to do their job. We also ask that you do not directly access any online platforms whilst your child is engaging in their learning. If you have any questions or concerns, we urge you to refer them to the campus where a delegate will follow up on your enquiry.

We will continue to communicate with our families again indicating processes beyond Week 4 - 22nd May, 2020. The College will continue to be guided by the Department of Education and the Department of Health and our priority will always be the health and safety of our school community. We appreciate your continued support.

We, like many of you, look forward to a return of normal life. We will attempt to correspond as quickly as possible with you in these dynamic times.

If parents/carers have any questions please contact our front office staff on email (hsc-westport-school@det.nsw.edu.au) or via our website at https://www.hastingssecondarycollege.com.au/contact-us
