Welcome to Term 3. On Tuesday, via a ZOOM assembly, I welcomed students and staff back to school. I spoke about how, despite the uncertainty that still surrounds us, Term 3 marks an opportunity to re-set.
You’ll notice the photo that appears at the beginning of the newsletter this week. I wanted to announce the permanent appointment of Mr Geoff Duck as Deputy Principal at Port Campus. I am very excited to work alongside Geoff as we have many exciting projects taking place in the coming years. On behalf on the whole school community, congratulations!
The changes implemented due to COVID-19 in Term 2 will stay in place for the safety and wellbeing of students and the wider school community. The most up-to-date information can be found on our website – Important Information Term 3. The most current information for HSC Students can be found on the NESA Website at the following links HSC students and NESA’s COVID Advice page.
If you require further information please refer to updated advice for families and COVID-19 Advice for Families or contact your campus. We will continue to update parents and carers when/if any changes arise.
Elective Choices Year 9 and 10 2021
All students entering Stage 5 at Hastings Secondary College are required to study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Personal Development/Health/Physical Education.
The selection of elective subjects for Years 9 and 10 is a very important decision time for students and parents. Students should select subjects they like and have an interest in and believe they will do well in for the Record of School Achievement (RoSA).
It is important for students to select their most enjoyable subjects, as this will give them a positive attitude to all aspects of their studies and this positive attitude will then be carried on into the very important Years 11 and 12.
Students should not select subjects based on what their friends are doing, the teacher they think might be teaching a certain subject and, to a lesser extent, as a pre-requisite to their Year 11 and 12 studies.
It is also important to give your initial thoughts a lot of care; change of subjects is not impossible, but it does place the student at a distinct disadvantage as they will be behind the other students completing the course. It is also possible that the other classes are full. It is much better to choose carefully and correctly the first time. High demand electives fill quickly, so it is important students choose wisely.
I encourage parents to discuss the subject offerings with their child. Students should choose courses in which they are interested, and which will provide them with sound preparation for the future.
Please note that:
- These course expectations are set by the NSW Education Standards Authority and the Department of Education. (NESA)
- Satisfactory participation in electives is required for the Record of School Achievement. Students should ensure that they choose carefully and wisely as there will be little or no opportunity to make changes to selections.
- Some electives have associated fees to pay for materials. These elective costs are compulsory, as there is no government funding provided to schools to run these courses.
Our first parent lounge for this Term will take place on Thursday 5 August at 5.30 pm. Zoom log-in details will be sent via SMS and email to parents and carers the day prior to the session. Fast Track 2 Employment Program needs business and industry mentors.
Take a moment to reflect on your educational or career journey. Did you have an inspirational teacher? Or maybe you had a co-worker or a manager who took you under his or her wing and showed you the ropes?
If you were lucky enough to have someone who helped you along the way, then you know firsthand the value of mentoring. For more information contact Mr Leon Ruhl via our website at Fast Track 2 Employment.
