Last month Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium was host to the first round of the CHSSA Opens Basketball Competition. This gala day saw nine strong public school teams, from the Lower Mid North Coast, play against each other in a knockout style format.
Port Macquarie Campus was represented well in both the Boys and Girls divisions.
Our Open Girls team consisted of nine students who played amazingly well after limited training prior to the day. Their first match was a toughly fought physical game against Bowraville High. The girls came from a deficit of 10 plus points in the third to claim victory in the fourth with a surging effort from Lily Maqueda, Gemma Lawrence, Charli Power and Mary Vogels.
This led our team into the finals against a ‘stacked’ Wauchope High where we found our feet through the second quarter, with the girls Lily, Charli, Natasha and Gemma digging deep to put points on the board. However, it was not to be, as Wauchope were too strong throughout the game with clever passing and communication claiming victory.
Our Opens Boys team consisted of 12 students who have been training since Term 4 last year and throughout the Christmas holiday period.
This training paid off in our first game against Macksville High, winning comfortably 52 to 31.
The next game forced us to focus on making the right shot and ‘sinking baskets’ after forcing turnovers from playing strong defense against Kempsey High. The team also took the chance to bond on the court by sharing the ball well. With great advice and team rotation from Coach Stuckey, the Boys team won convincingly 59 to 16.
Usually this would take the team to the finals of the day, however, due to the strong number of teams from all schools, we had to prove our worth once more before thinking about the next stage. This match was our toughest yet against a physical Wauchope High. However due to great coaching and sharing the ball, the boys claimed victory again with a 19 point win over Wauchope. PMC 47 – 28 WHS
Finally the months of hard work paid off and the team was in the finals of the day against an always-strong Melville High, who had previously taken out the favourite to win, Nambucca High.
The extremely short turn over between the third and fourth games had little impact on a determined Port Macquarie Campus side. The team utilized the right players at the right time throughout the game comfortably taking control early and keeping the Melville scorers at bay with great defense. The Boys won the final PMC 54 – 36 Melville.
Special mention goes to Xavier Davidson, Tim Douglas and Harri Sewell for their relentless focus and team camaraderie.
The Boys now go through to the next round of the CHSSA competition to play against the winning side from Upper North Coast schools.
All players had a great day and were inclusive of everyone. The sportsmanship from Port Macquarie Campus students was on show by applauding our opponent’s great shots and decision-making.
The following students were selected in the Lower North Coast Representative Team, who will play the best students from Upper North Coast on Thursday 19 March at Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium:
Girls: Lily Maqueda, Charli Power and Gemma Lawrence
Boys: Zavier Davidson, Tim Douglas and Kael Harris
