If you do one thing, make sure it's Drop Everything and Read (DEAR).
A huge thank you to our DEAR volunteers, who assist our students in this critical program. As a small token of our appreciation, a thank you morning tea was provided today, catered by our hospitality students to thank volunteers for their time, dedication and inspiration to our students.
Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus Drop Everything and Read Program (DEAR) has been established at Westport Campus for twelve years.
This reading program provides students with much more than a just-sit-there-and-read experience. It gives our DEAR program volunteers a structured time to touch base with each student over a period of time, assess progress, and target instruction.
Even more important, it gives students time to read what they want to read, share what they've read, and receive the support they need for further reading explorations and reflections.
Daily reading sessions last between twenty and thirty minutes and are followed by fifteen minutes in which students can write in their reading response logs.
When a student completes a book, they confer with their volunteer reading teacher to discuss the book and share their reading log.
Overall feedback from both staff and students has been positive, and parents too have began to comment on how they were happy to see reading for pleasure as part of a secondary school’s focus.
Tracey Frazier has coordinated the DEAR program for the past twelve years and has been a fundamental pillar in the success of the program.
