NRL

The 21st of May was brought on by beautiful weather as the Hastings Secondary College under 13’s and 15’s boys took to the rugby league fields at Wood Park for the annual NRL Country Cup.

Both teams started off their day with games against Melville High. Although the 13’s started poorly by allowing Melville to score early, a great solo 100m run from Jesse Brady, receiving the ball from a kick, return sprinted down the touch line to score under the posts. This put the team into the lead 6-4. From there Melville took control and came out on top with a 22-12 win. The under 15’s put in a huge effort but were out played as well, going down 24-7, with the boys kicking a field goal to get on to the scoreboard.

The second match for the under 13’s was against Wauchope and the boys were warmed up and keen to make up for their previous loss. It was a cake walk to end all cake walks, as our team rolled in try after try.  With Jesse Brady once again the star player, the team ran away with an impressive 50-0 victory, sending them to the playoff match against Mackillop.

Upon winning the Mackillop match, the under 13’s would have been off to the Country Championships in Taree. However, things didn't start well as they knocked on from the kick off. This had the boys on the back foot early and with a mounting penalty count they went into half time, down 12-0. The second half was a much tighter affair with Mackillop running in the only try. The final scores was 18-0 which however, did not reflect the effort put in by our team and they were gallant in their defeat.

It was great to see students from both campuses come together and enjoy the day. The talent displayed gives us plenty of hope for the future. Well done boys.
